Former Moyale MP Guyo Halake shot dead in his home

Presentation1Former Moyale MP Guyo Halake was Wednesday night shot dead by unknown assailants in his home in Moyale Town. The attackers are said to have escaped without stealing anything from the deceased’s home, about four kilometers from Moyale Town. Witnesses and police said Halake was chewing miraa in his house when the gunmen stormed in at about 8pm and shot him four times, killing him on the spot. The incident sparked tension and protests in the town given Halake was a member of the local peace committee that has been pushing for peace among local clans. Inter-clan fighting in the area has seen dozens of people killed and others displaced. Halake, a prominent Borana leader was among those who were championing for peace. The motive of his killing is yet to be known.

A group of locals who were angered by the news of Halake’s death blocked the road stopping police from collecting the body. The protesters stoned a police land cruiser at 8pm damaging the windscreen, forcing officers to retreat to the station. The body was collected long after local leaders had intervened.
